

Jiaying Zhou
(Chinese: 周嘉颖 [dʒoʊ ˈdʒɑː jiŋ], born on May 2, 1995, in Yushan County, Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, China) is a Chinese composer currently residing in Shanghai.
During her studies, she was awarded the National Art Fund,National Scholarship, People's Scholarship, and Fu Chengxian Scholarship.
She earned her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.During her undergraduate years, she studied under Associate Professor Su Xiao. For her master’s degree, she studied with Professor Wang Jianmin and received short-term guidance from Professor Elmar Lampson.Received multiple awards at national and international levels.In 2017, her percussion duet Astral Trip won the IPCL-Luxembourg International Composition Competition as the sole winner. The work was designated as a mandatory piece for the preliminary round of the 2018 Luxembourg International Percussion Competition and was published by Luxembourg’s Axent Publishing.
In 2024, her composition Bingyu—a piece for the traditional Chinese bowed string instrument Zhonghu and orchestra—was selected as one of the three winning works in the seventh edition of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) “Young Composer Program”, initiated by Qigang Chen. She also received the “Performers’ Favorite Work Award” for the same piece. Bingyu was released under the NCPA Classics label and has been performed multiple times in subsequent concert seasons.
Her works have been performed by the National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra(NCPA), Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, and Singapore Ding Yi Music Company.Works performed at Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, Shanghai MISA International Music Festival, Hangzhou Contemporary Music Festival, China-ASEAN Music Week, the 3rd Chinese National Music Festival, the 2022 Beijing-China Bowed Strings Music Festival, and the 20th Beijing-China Bowed Strings Music Festival.
Zhou’s works are deeply inspired by natural phenomena and humanistic sentiments. She strives to integrate diverse techniques to create soundscapes from a unique perspective.
